The problem

What kerb damage actually does

A kerb strike takes material off the outer rim edge, which is the most visible part of the wheel and also the part that seals against the tyre. On a low profile tyre there is very little sidewall protecting it, which is why one tight multi storey ramp or one misjudged parking bay is enough.

The visible scar is only part of it. A hard strike can distort the rim edge and disturb the bead seal, which shows up later as a slow puncture that nobody can find. It also opens bare metal to the weather, and on a diamond cut wheel that is exactly where corrosion starts.

Rebuilt, not filled

The quick version of this repair is to pack the damage with filler, sand it flush and spray over the top. It looks acceptable for a season. Then the filler shrinks, the edge line goes soft, and the repair announces itself every time the light catches it.

We rebuild the rim edge back to its original profile and blend it into the surrounding metal, so the geometry of the edge is restored rather than disguised. Then the wheel is refinished by whichever method it originally carried, which means recut on the lathe if it was diamond cut, or stripped and powder coated if it was not.

Done that way the repair does not reappear at the next MOT, and it does not become the next owner problem.

When it is worth doing all four

One kerbed wheel is one job and we are happy to do exactly that. But if the other three are tired, refinishing the set at once usually makes more sense than returning twice, because a single fresh wheel against three weathered ones is obvious.

Send photographs of all four and we will tell you honestly which ones actually need work. We would rather do one wheel properly than talk you into four you do not need.
